What is Oud?

What is Oud?

Oud, also known as agarwood, aloeswood, or gaharu, is a highly prized, fragrant dark resinous wood used in perfumery, incense, and traditional medicine. It is obtained from various evergreen trees that belong to the Aquilaria genus, which are found primarily in Southeast Asia and Northeast India.

History of Oud

Oud oil has been used for centuries in perfumery, traditional medicine, and religious rituals.

Perfumery: The use of oud oil in perfumery can be traced back to ancient times in the Middle East, India, and Southeast Asia. The oil was highly prized for its unique and complex aroma, often described as woody, spicy, and musky. It was used to create perfumes and incense.

Traditional Medicine: In traditional medicine, the oil is often inhaled in aromatherapy to help promote calmness and relaxation and reduce stress and anxiety. It's also applied topically to the skin to help relieve pain and inflammation. Oud oil is also believed to have antimicrobial properties and is used in traditional medicine to treat various infections and skin conditions.

Religious rituals: In the Middle East, oud oil has been used for centuries in religious ceremonies, particularly in the Islamic tradition. The oil is often used to scent prayer beads and other religious objects, and it is also used to fragrance the air during religious ceremonies to promote calmness and reduce anxiety.

In recent years, the demand for oud oil has increased worldwide, particularly in the perfumery industry. However, due to over-harvesting and unsustainable logging practices, many Aquilaria species have become endangered, leading to strict regulations and certification processes to ensure sustainable harvesting and production of the oil.

We at Attar Affair take pride in sharing that the oud oil used in our product line is naturally grown and sustainably sourced.

We have worked with our artisans to create a collection of amazing oud fragrances which include:
